Rich Chorus

Tai Chi has a rich and luscious chorus. With scores of synchronised modulated reads distributed throughout the reverb it thickens synth and guitars beautifully whilst avoid the characteristic dragging sharp and flat in many heavily chorused reverbs of old. Of course if you want some heavy detuning or dissonant reverberant drifting we’ve got you covered, it is only a click away!

Subtle chorus can be dialled in to elevate and enrich virtually any source, or more extreme settings can create dramatic soundscapes that quickly diverge into a psychedelic aura.

Contoured Multiband Reverb

For reverb decay time shaping we always had to choose between the rigid precision sculpting of multi-band decays or the smoothly evolving roll-off of traditional contouring filters. With Tai Chi you can do both!

The result is a high amount of control over reverb evolution in time and frequency. Whether it’s for creative sound design or realistic space simulation – or a combination of the two – you’ll appreciate the power and versatility of Tai Chi.

Dynamics

Harness the power of dynamics! Ducking and compression allow you to improve the clarity and intelligibility of vocal phrases by keeping the reverb out of the way when it matters most and letting it flood in to fill the gaps when you need it.

Tai Chi lets you apply dynamics to the wet mix or just the reverb itself. This means the spatialisation provided by the reflection engine is never compromised even when extreme reverb ducking is called for.

Fidelity & Filtering

In a nod to reverbs of old that had very limited signal bandwidth and bit depth capability but a ton of vintage character, Tai Chi lets you degrade, crush and brick-wall your verb for classic grit and dirt. When combined with the density and diffusion controls which can conjure very sparse reverbs right the way up to contemporary high-density spaces it is possible to simulate a style of reverb from virtually any era with ease.

You can even apply degradation to different elements. Try fuzzing just the reflections with a low bit-rate early region or set the tail to sizzle away in an 8-bit griddle with reduced reverb loop bit depth processing. Finally apply low/high roll-off and shelve filters in the master equaliser to finesse an ear-catching space.

Innovative Design

Tai Chi is a modern take on the classic feedback delay network (FDN) algorithm. Innovative approaches to diffusion are employed to eliminate ringing whilst rapidly building density, and whilst many FDNs are fairly short with minimal modulation the Tai Chi design uses many more and much longer delay lines than is typical. This means much greater dissipation within the reverb structures and many more opportunities to apply deep structural modulations in multiple styles (i.e. glide chorusing, spin/wander, and FDN recirculation modulation).

The spread control allows your reverbs to develop distinctive textures creating reverbs that sound larger and more spacious.

This all resultss in a luscious reverberation with highly effective modulations that interweave with the sources, providing a sound design workflow rarely found in any reverb.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_section css=”.vc_custom_1625764376347{background-color: rgba(10,10,10,0.85) !important;*background-color: rgb(10,10,10) !important;}”][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Lite Edition

If the full fat Tai Chi is more than you need right now, try Tai Chi Lite. With the same great chorus, reverb and reflections engine but without the multi-band, fidelity and dynamics engines it is the ideal low-cost route to a rich and luscious reverb for your production arsenal. • Windows 7 or macOS 10.9
  • VST 2.4, VST 3, Audio Unit and AAX
  • iLok Cloud, iLok 2/3 USB dongle or iLok local activation
  • iLok License Manager v5.4 or above

Despite extensive optimisation the the Tai Chi algorithm prioritises sound quality over performance at every opportunity. This no-compromises approach necessitates pairing the reverb with a powerful system if you require high channel counts, low buffer sizes, live play of virtual instruments or tracking. Powerful CPUs from 2019 and later are highly recommended such as:

  • AMD Zen 3 or higher (e.g. 5000 series and up)
  • Intel 10th or 11th gen or higher (e.g. 10xxx, 11xxx series and up)
  • 6 cores minimum (8+ recommended)

Despite the high core counts available in some older CPUs the dominating factor for good performance is the availability of modern CPU vector extensions and very strong single-core performance especially at lower buffer sizes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section][vc_section css=”.vc_custom_1628079221909{background-color: rgba(10,10,10,0.85) !important;*background-color: rgb(10,10,10) !important;}”][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Audio Demonstrations

Whilst Tai Chi excels at turning simple synth patches into rich evolving soundscapes with its luscious chorus, agile multi-band multipliers and flexible fidelity effects, it also has the range and dexterity to provide sophisticated and transparent reverbs for natural sources including drums and piano. From use as a character reverb excelling in creative sound-design work through to general-purpose workhorse reverb needs that demand transparency and clarity, Tai Chi really can do it all.

Although there is no substitute for experiencing the magic of a new reverb with your own productions, if you don’t have time to try out the free demo just take a listen to the audio examples below to hear how Tai Chi sounds different from any other reverb in your collection.

The standard edition of Tai Chi was used exclusively on the dry samples for these demonstrations using factory presets.[/vc_column_text][vc_tta_tabs style=”flat” shape=”square” color=”black” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”Lead Synth” tab_id=”1625655485434-bb00bf76-df06″][vc_column_text]Detuned Pluck

Preset: Synth Spice | Ensemble At Sea

An illustration of dense multi-band reverberation and very heavy chorusing being used to create a huge ensemble pad-like wash of air around a very simple detuned dual-oscillator using a modern soft-synth. Heavy bit-crushing in the tail introduces noise, and the extremely dense chorusing of Tai Chi makes it possible to rapidly detune the noise, source and reverb in iterative passes around the FDNs. The pluck was designed from simple detuned oscillators in Serum.

Virtual Analogue Unison Lead Arp

Preset: Synth Spice | Unison Arp

A sample illustrating the classic technique of thickening a detuned unison super-saw arp sound from an Access Virus B hardware synthesizer using heavily chorused reverberation in the early reflections and late components. A staple of EDM in the early 2000s, here achieved without the use of additional choruses, phasers or delays as would often be needed to achieve the effect.

Arp With Short Chorused Ambience

Preset: Synth Spice | Bright Ambience (edit)

In the first sample we illustrated using a generous application of reverb on the synth, in comparison this sample adds strongly chorused ambience around the sound. Using the same chords with a modified arp sequence and patch, an edited version of Bright Ambience has been selected for use and becomes a part of the synth’s core sound. The reverb’s chorus is used to thicken the patch which already has strong unison and phasing characteristics which the reverb accentuates. Dynamics (reverb ducking) is used to lower the reverb when the main synth is audible, quickly releasing to allow the reverb to return to full level filling the gaps between fast syncopated synth stabs. This has the effect of elongating and thickening the sound with a rich drifting tail, while allowing chorused early reflections to enhance the synth’s body throughout.

Detuned Pad

Preset: Artist Presets | Peter Ratner | Long Modulated Notes

Taking a generic saw pad from Serum (minus delay/reverb built-in effects), this example illustrates a swarm of modulated chorus swelling around simple sustained notes with short release turning a tight pad into a huge soundscape. A base reverb length of 13 seconds is intensified by a multi-band region multiplier of 3.1x between 2.6 – 7 kHz for over 40 seconds of reverb in the focal point band. The reverb blooms into a wash of mid/high-mid ambience complimenting the pad with elongated tails in band-limited frequencies that blur into adjacent frequencies over time due to a moderately high modulation rate. A high contouring of 0.8x at 6 kHz continuously softens the highs as notes blend gently into one-another.
